Last night, the Canadian Cover Awards took place at the Courtyard Hotel in downtown Toronto. Jillean and I were on hand to watch a few of Canada’s most prestigious titles bask in recognition for their eye-catching covers and ability to continue to sell single issues.
The night was opened by Circulation Management Association of Canada (CMC) president Tony Danas and hosted (hilariously) by Cottage Life magazine’s assistant circulation manager Amanda Beattie. Produced by CMC and Magazines Canada, the awards ceremony presented top honours in 7 categories and the final title of Newsstand Marketer of the Year.
Rogers was the big winner of the night, taking home 3 awards, while SkyNews had the honour of winning under the Sports & Leisure category while publisher Greg Keilty won Marketer of the Year.
List of Winners:
Fashion, Shopping & Bridal: ELLE Québec, August 2012 (Véronique Cloutier)
General Interest, Arts, Lifestyle & Regional: Legion Magazine, January/February 2012 (The War of 1812)
Home & Décor: Style at Home, September 2011 (Bathroom Style)
News, Business & Celebrity: Canadian Business, February 2012 (Crash: Why House Prices are About to Fall)
SIPs and New Magazines: Maclean’s (Royal Wedding Special)
Sports & Leisure: SkyNews, May/June 2012 (Transit of Venus)
Women’s Service: Chatelaine, February 2012 (Comfort Food Makeovers)
Newsstand Marketer of the Year: Greg Keilty
Winners were determined by a judging panel of industry insiders with roles as a retailer, wholesaler, circulation director, national distributor and art director. Half the vote for the winner came from the insiders and the other half was based on the title's single copy sales figure.
